Deep water

I actually have to write two other blog articles to get them out of my head, but this thought just suddenly hit me and I wanted to write it down before I forget it.

I read about the death of a young boy who drowned in a river near his house (may Allah bless his soul) yet people who knew him better said, that he was a good swimmer.

That means it only requires a brief moment of carelessness or overconfidence, a change of the depth of the water your in or the circumstances around you and even a good swimmer may drown.

Let’s make a simple equation. Let the water be this world and the swimmer your imaan (islamic term for “faith”).

We often believe that since we were born muslims, practice religion and follow certain rules we will die muslims and live happily ever after. Wrong.

What if we like oh so often become overconfident with the strength of our imaan and don’t realise that we’re swimming in deep water. That the struggle with this world took so much of our attention that only a single unexpected wave, a change of circumstances can break us or our imaan easily.

If swimmers can drown, people with faith can also lose it.

Protect what’s precious to you and instead of checking out the outer appearance of other people, their amount of good deeds and so on try to double check yourself first. We may be in deep water already without being aware of it.

Let us try to swim in save waters and always remember to put on our life vest.

And most important: never forget to remember the One, that is capable of pulling you out – even when you’re deep down under water.
